June 26, 2008 from Michigan Runner (www.michiganrunner.net) What many consider to be the world's best track meet begins Friday at Hayward Field, University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon, and Michigan will be well represented. The U.S. has simple criteria for determining members of its track and field team: the top three finishers at the trials are on the team. The catch is that athletes must also achieve the Olympic standard time, distance, or number of points. This year, there is no window for chasing an Olympic standard after the trials, so there is added pressure on athletes who do not yet have the standard.

Michigan is particularly deep in distance, middle distance and hurdle events. Among the Michigan contenders are several 2004 Olympians: Grant Robison (1500m run), Jamei Nieto (high jump) , Lauryn Williams (100m dash, 4 x 100m relay), Paul Terek (decathlon), and Dathan Ritzenhein (10,000m run). Ritzenhein and Brian Sell are already members of the Olympic marathon team.

Who has a good chance to be on the team? Check each athlete's seeding against the field. Michigan Running News will be on site in Eugene and will keep readers posted.
