New Balance Games Recap

Written by Brett Hoover - http://www.armorytrack.com.

A little snow in New York didn't slow Strymar Livingston and Najee Glass from stealing the headlines at the 2012 New Balance Games today at The Armory in New York City.

Livingston, already the national record holder in the 600-meter run, erased the 27-year-old national high school record of Michael Greene in dramatic fashion, lowering the standard from Greene's 1:02.40 to 1:01.68. In the end, Glass' time of 1:02.16 moved Greene into third.

Last year, those two had a similar battle, but Glass — who runs for St. Peter's Prep in Jersey City, N.J. — was disqualified for running out of lane, giving the winning (and a N.Y. State record) to Livingston, who runs for Christopher Columbus High in the City.

That performance knocked Edward Cheserek of St. Benedict's Prep of Newark, N.J., from some of the headlines, but Cheserek's performance in the open mile was crowd-stopping. He stayed with the lead pack — which featured likely 2012 Olympians — throughout, finishing seventh in 4:02.21, the second-fastest time ever by a U.S. high schooler and the fastest ever by a junior. The lone runner to post a quicker time was Alan Webb, who broke the four-minute barrier indoor at The Armory in 2001.

The winner of the men's elite race was one of New Balance's British Milers — Andy Baddeley — who claimed the title in 3:57.22. He was among five runners under four minutes as Cheserek came in seventh overall.

The other winners of the elite open races were Brenda Martinez in the women's mile (4:39.37), Phoebe Wrightin the women's 800-meter run (2:02.32), Fawn Dorr in the women's 400-meter dash (53.34), Tevan Everett in the men's 800-meter run (1:47.70) and Lalonde Gordon in the men's 400-meter dash (46.43).

There were four final automatic qualifiers to the New Balance High School Miles at the Millrose Games as the top two girls and boys today advanced. West Genesee's Laura Leff (4:48.96) edged Megan Moye of Cosby, Va. (4:49.36) in the girls' race while Zavon Watkins of Liverpool, N.Y., beat Mike Marsella of Chariho, R.I. Watkins' time was 4:14.52 to Marsella's 4:15.27.
