The Merrell Oyster Racing Series will kick off urban adventure racing for 2010 in six cities, allowing hard-core participants to race the entire course while “newbies” and those looking for a good time can race in a relay team and take turns on different parts of the course.
Participants run, bike, paddle and climb plus perform other crazy athletic stuff while answering city-specific clues and completing tasks. This dynamic race’s signature start includes a blind bus ride to a part of a city and clues for the teams to navigate back to the race start. New this year, all 2010 “passports” (the guides to the race) will be texted to teams vs. being handed out on paper as in the past. The new system will be more interactive and trivia-filled, upping the fun!
Urban adventure racing is a growing trend; the numbers help tell the story:
· In its first year the Denver Oyster was raced by 19 teams, and there are upwards of 130 this year
· 77% of racers plan on doing the Oyster again and 62% plan to recruit new teams
· Both teams and individuals often travel to other cities to compete and many individuals and teams compete in more than one Oyster
This year’s races will take place:
- Denver – August 21st
- Seattle – August 28th
- Portland – September 18th
- San Francisco – September 25th
- Austin – October 16th
- Nashville – October 23rd
