2010 Arnold 5K Pump and Run

The 10th annual Arnold 5K Pump and Run was one of the 44 athletic events held during the Arnold Fitness Weekend, which is billed as "The Largest Fitness Expo in the World". Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger was on hand again this year to start the race. Governor Schwarzenegger said the "The Pump and Run is a true test of one's fitness as it combines both strength and endurance."
With 800 athletes registered for the Arnold 5K Pump and Run from thirty-one States, Washington D.C. and Canada, this event is the largest of its' kind in the World. The limit of 800 athletes was reached in twenty three hours. The race started on High Street at the north end of the Greater Columbus Convention Center, ran towards downtown, by the Nationwide Arena, around Goodale Park, through the Short North, North Market area, and the Arena District, and finished behind the Convention Center.

Before the runners started their run they spent the morning weighing in and bench pressing to reduce their running times. The lifting rules were: Men 39 and under bench pressed 100% of their weight, men 40 - 49 did 90% of their weight, men 50 and over benched 80% of their weight, men 60-69 did 70% and men 70 and over lifted 60%. Women 39 and under benched pressed 70% of their weight, women 40 - 49 benched 60% of their weight, women 50-59 benched 50% of their weight and women 60 and over lifted 40%. For each lift a runner's time was reduced by 30 seconds with a maximum of 30 reps counted.


Ten of the top twelve men maxed out with thirty lifts.  Washington D.C.’s Vaughn O’Brien (34) has been a top ten finisher for the past five years and improved on his fifth place finish from last year by again lifting his body weight 30 times and running the fastest time of the day with his 16:16 to post a 1:16 overall victory.  O’Brien’s time was a minute and thirty seconds faster this year than in 2009.  Dexter, Michigan’s Scott McLean (40) lifted thirty reps and ran 16:41 to record a 1:41 silver place finish.  Columbus’ Nathan Aichele (28) maxed out with 30 lifts and ran 16:43 to improve on his 2009 sixth place finish winning the bronze in 1:43.  Rockville, Maryland’s Jamie Cope (29) lifted 30 reps and ran 17:24 to repeat his fourth place finish from last year as he recorded a 2:24.  Pacifica, California’s Josh Hofbauer (22) lifted 29 reps and ran 17:13 to place fifth in 2:43.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania’s Jay Siezemore (30) lifted 28 reps and ran 16:47 to place sixth in 2:47.  Marion’s Stan Nicole (48) lifted 30 reps and ran 18:21 to repeat his seventh place finish from last year with his final time of 3:21.  St Clairsville’s R. J. Nolte (29) maxed out with thirty lifts and ran 18:33 to finish eighth in 3:33.  Davison, Michigan’s Tony Ketchmark (47) lifted 30 reps and ran 18:46 to finish ninth in 3:46.  Marion’s Derek Bibler (23) was ninth in 2009 finish tenth with 30 reps and a run time of 18:47 to record a 3:47.

The top twelve women all maxed out with their thirty lifts. Former Ohio resident Lisa Veneziano (45) now living in Fenton, Michigan had the fastest time for the day for women as she covered the downtown 5km in 18:18 to win her sixth straight title with her overall time of 3:18.  Cincinnati’s Megan Ward (27) ran 19:43 to take home runner up honors in 4:43.  Hillsboro’s Tara Beery (37) improved one spot from last year with her 20:52 run and time of 5:52 to take home the bronze.  McDonough, Georgia’s Theresa Winterhalter (45) placed second in 2009 ran a 21:10 to record a final time of 6:10 to place fourth.  Athens’ Janalee Stock (55) ran 21:20 to post a fifth place time of 6:20.

Columbus’ Cookie O’Neal (57) finish fifth in 2009 ran 21:23 to finish sixth in 6:23.  Charleston, West Virginia’s Mickra King (42) ran a 21:32 to place seventh in 6:32.  Hermitage, Pennsylvania’s Elise Boyd (44) ran a 21:33 to finish eighth with her finish time of 6:33.  Loudonville’s Terri Lemke (49) was fifth in 2009 ran a 22:21 to place ninth in 7:21.  Powell’s Kathryn Stephens (34) ran the 5km run in 23:01 to finish tenth in 8:01.

The event had the support of the entire running community. RUNOHIO's Matt McGowan served as co race director along with Tim Pancher.  Pancher and his workers along with the help of the U.S Marines oversaw the bench pressing. Jeff McGowan and Run Time Systems scored the event. Jeff Glaze and Premier Sports provided computer chip timing for the race, Jeff Sheard and UltraFit – USA provided finish line support and cross-country coaches from Bishop Watterson High School and Whetstone High School worked the race.

The Arnold Sports Festival is the brainchild of Governor Schwarzengger and James Lorimer, who have nurtured what began as a world-class bodybuilding competition in Columbus in the 1978 into one of the worlds most popular and innovative sports festivals. The Arnold Sports Festival is the largest three-day sports festival in the world with more than 18,000 athletes competing in 44 sports including 12 Olympic sports.
