Atlanta – October 18, 2011: The Publix Georgia Marathon’s streakcontinues. US Road Sports, owners and operators ofthe race, announced the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) has awarded theevent the 2012 Southern Region Marathon Championship. This marks the fifth consecutive year the Atlantaevent has earned state or southern region championship honors. The race received RRCA Georgia MarathonChampionship Race honors in 2008, 2010 and 2011, and RRCA Southern RegionMarathon Championship honors in 2009. The Publix Georgia Marathon willtake place on Sunday, March 18, 2012, at 7 a.m. EST, at Centennial Olympic Parkin downtown Atlanta.
“When assessing a race, we look atwhat a race should provide to runners competing for Southern Region MarathonChampionship honors,” said RRCA Georgia State Representative Mark Ward. For the fifth consecutive year, the RRCA hasdeemed the Publix Georgia Marathon deserving of a championship title. Earning this award, while solidifying Publixas its title sponsor, speaks highly of the race and personnel involved.”

The PublixGeorgia Marathon & Half Marathon have become an annual March tradition fordistance runners since 2007. More than18,000 runners participated in last year’s events, and US Road Sports continuesto offer participants many reasons to return in 2012. Participants will receive a customizedrunning tech shirt, a finisher’s medal, and a Publix drawstring goodiebag.
The26.2-mile and 13.1-mile courses willtravel through metro Atlanta’smost interesting and historic areas, including the Sweet Auburn district, Inman Park, Decatur, Druid Hills, Virginia-Highlandand Midtown areas. Along the way, runners will pass landmarks, including theKing Historic Site, CarterCenter,four college campuses and Piedmont Park.
PublixGeorgia Marathon race weekend will also provide participants a chance toreceive health and fitness tips and purchase running gear at the Publix GeorgiaMarathon Health & Fitness Expo held at the Georgia World Congress Center onFriday-Saturday, March 16-17.
