The Stanley marathon took place on March 15th. It is the World's most southerly AIMS certified marathon and probably one of the most challenging.

* This year a new course record was set for the men's open race.
* Teslyn Barkman, 20, carried off the trophies for fastest female and fastest local born runner.
* The race is also open to teams of 4. The fastest team was a group from the Falkland Islands Football Club, beating the Gurkhas into second place.
* The marathon is organized by the Standard Chartered Bank. The event raises money for the charity "Seeing is Believing." http://www.seeingisbelieving.org.uk/
This year Henry Wanyoike and Joseph Kibunja from Kenya (and the global ambassadors for charity) took part in the race to highlight the work of the charity. Henry is a sensational person and a global icon for people with disability and what they can achieve. He trained hard after losing his sight earning him a place in the national squad for the 5,000m at the Sydney Paralympics in 2000. He not only won the gold medal, but set a Paralympic record. He was nominated for a Laureus World Sports Award in 2005, named Kenya's Sportsperson of the Year and was the runner up for the UN's Personality of the Year Award. Joseph is Henry's best friend for 20 years and he is a seasoned runner with most recent win at the 2009 Jersey Marathon with 2hrs 33 minutes and 29 second.
The marathon is open to international participants. As well as local runners it attracts competitors from HM Armed Forces who are stationed in the Islands. Some military personnel and others travel to the Islands from
overseas to take part.
